Solo gigs

In the last year or so, I have started to focus on solo performances as a way to connect to music and the audience in a different way. My shows are primarily acoustic guitar-based, although I have recently started to do a couple songs with an electric guitar and backing tracks. That’s not something I want to make a whole show of, but I’ve been surprised at how well they have been going over with audiences. The material I do spans the 60’s to today with a sharp focus on 80’s material. I try to behave and play songs that everyone knows, but some fun obscurities always seem to find their way into the set.

Chris Michels and I got together in the summer of 1997 with the intent of killing time until we found something else to do. We’re still playing together a few times a month 24 years later. We’ve recorded two albums of mostly original material and played over 1000 shows.

Tribe of Names is a project that has evolved from a band called Valdez. I joined Valdez in the fall of 2019, and we soon began recording an album. Then…PANDEMIC-O-RAMA! During the turbulence of 2020, we lost our keyboard player, changed the name to Tribe of Names, created a YouTube presence, re-arranged all the songs to suit the new instrumentation, and recorded an album. Not bad! Evolver was released through Bad Elephant Music on November 4, 2022. It is available at Bandcamp as a download or a physical CD. We played our album release show and then immediately set to work writing the next album.

Pinnacle has been my original progressive rock project for 19 years and counting. We have recorded four albums on our own, which are still available through Bandcamp (link on the Pinnacle site). For a variety of personal reasons, we have had to take a step back from the band in recent years, but we still enjoy getting together and making music when we can. There is still writing happening and we still want to get out and play some live shows, but we are not working on any set schedule for anything at the moment.

Bands I’ve performed with:

Mr. Brown, Different Strings, Common Ground, Mike Dugan & Blues Mission (for two gigs), The Starlites (full time for 2 ½ years), Twist of Fate, Recess, Silverthorne, Paradigm Shift

I got my teaching certification in 2012 and lucked into a fantastic job at the newly-created Arts Academy Charter Middle School in Allentown, PA. In ten years I have taught guitar, reading, writing, and social studies, and I run the tech crew for our school performances.
